6018 1930s Kingswear
An immaculate 6018,"King Henry VI " when allocated to Newton Abbot, an unusual site for a " King " at that period in time when most of the early examples emerging from Swindon newly built had gone to Laira or Old Oak Common. 6018 has one of the Great Western's red lamps on the topmost smokebox bracket, its original position, and has probably worked a stopping service from Newton Abbot before being turned on the Kingswear turntable and taking an express through to Paddington as there's a tender full of coal visible. In later years regarded as being one of the best of the class 6018 was to spend a year or so at Bristol Bath Road before a ten year period at Old Oak, and was one of the six sent to Cardiff Canton in 1960 in an efffort to find suitable work for them, before being withdrawn in December 1962 and cut up at Swindon after a sale to Butlins failed to materialise.
