6004 1958 Dainton

6004 1958 Dainton

A striking lineside image of Laira's 6004 " King George III " as it reaches the top of Dainton bank and its tunnel, Paddington bound with the " Cornish Riviera " which it had taken over at Plymouth North Road and with no grubby pilot engine to spoil the view, so the load should hopefully be within the ten coach limit for an unassisted " King " over these banks to Newton Abbot. So much of interest in this view, with the delightful signal box and the large mirror set so that the signalman can see that all is well with workings climbing into the tunnel with no missing tail lamps or similar problems when his view might be obstructed by something on the " down " line in front of his box, whilst the permanent " 40 " speed restriction board warns drivers of the 1 in 36 six falling gradient with its severe curves to Totnes.6004 went to Laira in early 1954 in an exchange between that depot and Wolverhampton Stafford Road with Laira's 6014 going to Wolverhampton but 6004 was later lost to Laira at the end of 1959, going to Old Oak Common and Cardiff Canton from where it was condemned in September 1962. That piece of siding line just visible on the right is actually on the level, which shows how steep the main line is!
