6006 1948-03-27 Leamington Spa
A very nice portrait of Stafford Road's 6006 " King George I " in the sunshine at Leamington on 27th. March, 1948, the engine clearly displaying its original G.W.R. design of smoothed inside valve chest casing which was pleasing to the eye but must have provided a less than safe foothold for crews and shed staff, especially in the wet, that factor doubtless being the reason behind the subsequent wholesale removal and introduction of a more squared design following Nationalisation.
6006 had the unhappy distinction of being the very first " King " to be condemned, being withdrawn from Stafford Road as early as February, 1962 before being cut up at Swindon just two months later
