6010 1930s Exeter
6010 King Charles I waiting in the sunlight to leave Exeter St. Davids and head home to Plymouth.
Apart from spending three months from late December 1929 to February 1930 at Newton Abbot this King was a Laira engine for most of its working life, its first home from new in 1928, and then again at Laira from February 1930 until April 1959.
Original features visible are the smooth casing over the inside cylinder block together with the polished covers to the inside valves.
The topmost lamp bracket in its original position above the smokebox with the step providing access to that bracket on the smokebox door but when that top bracket was later repositioned on the smokebox door the footstep was accordingly removed and no longer required.
The original design of springs and brass axlebox cover to the leading bogie wheels show up well here, but following the derailment of 6003 King George IV at Midgham near Newbury in August 1927 whilst working the down Cornish Riviera substantial modifications were carried out, including the fitting of coil springs to that leading bogie axle on the initial six Kings then in service, with those entering service thereafter being so treated from new, and I wonder, therefore, whether this is an earlier than 1930's view as no coil springs appear to be fitted.
