6004 1956c Teignmouth

With the later style of "Cornish Riviera" headboard and seen here passing Sprey Point on the sea wall at Teignmouth 6004 "King George III" makes a fine close up picture on what appears to be a rather dull and murky day.
If the load is over the ten coach, 360 tons maximum permitted for an unassisted "King" over the South Devon banks to Plymouth there will be a need for an unbooked stop at Newton Abbot in order to pick up a pilot engine, but otherwise they will run through to Plymouth.
In days past there was a cafe at Sprey Point, which lasted until the end of the war, but today there's just a gangers' hut there. This area was built from the rocks of a massive cliff landslide which took place when the line was under construction back in 1839.
6004 became a Laira engine in March 1954 in exchange for Laira's 6014 which went to Stafford Road for use on the Wolverhampton line in conjunction with water softening tests.
