6002 1939c Swindon
An early 1939 image of 6002, " King William IV " which shows some of the original features of the " Kings " which were to be altered in the subsequent years.
Most noticeable is the smoothed casing over the inside valve chest, which looked nice but which must have been a trap for unwary shedstaff and footplatemen with their heavy duty boots, especially in the wet when it would have been slippery, with none of the treadplate which came in later years.
The original style of outside steampipes seen here lasted until 1953 when a new design was fitted, reducing the tendency for fractures to occur in this original design as the result of movement and flexing between the outside cylinders and frames.
Although the top lamp bracket is now on the smokebox door, 6002 still has the footstep in place from when the bracket was mounted on the top of the smokebox, and the engine has the original design of brass axlebox covers to the leading bogie axle.
