6017 1957-06-16 Swindon Works
A fine portrait of 6017, " King Edward IV " fresh from a Heavy Intermediate overhaul at Swindon which had seen the engine within the Works since the end of April from its home at Laira.
6017 was one of the class which had here at Swindon some years previously been fitted with replacement front ends to the main frames, incorporating a new inside cylinder block, the strengthening surrounds to the lifting holes at the front of the frames visible in this view confirming this fact.
The mechanical lubricator has been moved ahead of the new design of main steam pipe so as to permit easier access to the inside valve gear for manual lubrication and the later design of copper capped double chimney is a far better design than the original fabricated steel version originally fitted.
