6000 196x Swindon
It's a pity we haven't the exact year of this splendid vew of 6000, but from the picture it is just possbile to determine that the engine has already had new front frames and front end, almost certainly from an earlier overhaul in the 'fifties. This photograph is just shown as 196X and would, therefore, date from a much later overhaul as 6000 was withdrawn in December 1962 and so I would date this view as being from August 1961 following a Light Intermediate Overhaul lasting two months. Following withdrawal at the end 1962 6000 languished for a while in the open at the Works and thereafter was stored in Swindon's Stock Shed from where, following a memorabletowing out by two thousand or so enthusiasts on 9th. August, 1968, King George V was finally returned to steam again in September 1971.
