6005 1960s Wednesbury

6005 1960s Wednesbury

This is a really nice portrayal of 6005 "King George II" on the Paddington to Birmingham and Chester line, nicely turned out and look at that coal piled high in the tender!
Of particular interest is the clearly visible slotted bogie front frame, this particular bogie having been carried by a number of "Kings". It was an experiment to facilitate air flow to the trailing bogie wheels with their inside bearings, liable to run hot in comparison with the leading pair and their outside bearings.
6005 had received a Heavy Overhaul at Swindon Works in May 1960, so this may account for its smart appearance, possibly soon after that date.
6005 was one of the class to have new front frames in the mid 'fifties but not all were so equipped, the strengthened lifting holes in the front frame side members confirming this to be the case here.
6005 was withdrawn from Old Oak Common in November 1962 and ended its days at Cashmores at Newport.
