6018 1960s Swindon Works
It's a pity we don't know the month or year of this interesting image of King Henry VI outside 'A' Shop at Swindon. The engine received a Heavy Overhaul there in December 1961 so the picture may date from then.
Of interest, however, is that following 6018's run on the final BR Special of Sunday 28th April 1963 it went back to Swindon during July that year as plans for the engine's sale as a static exhibit at a Butlin's Holiday Camp were in hand and preparatory work was undertaken in the Works 'A' Shop.
The sale, however, failed to take place due to financial hurdles being placed in the way by those in authority and 6018 was again condemned and disposed of at Swindon that October. Rumours then began to circulate that 6018 was going to be preserved in place of 6000 King George V, even going so far as to speculate that the two engines were to exchange identities, rather like 4082 Windsor Castle and 7013 Bristol Castle had done some years previously. A photograph even appeared in one of the enthusiasts' magazines of the time showing a 'King' at Woodhams Barry scrapyard with 6000 painted on the cabside, but it certainly wasn't King George V as it was clear from that picture that the two red route restriction discs had not been situated below the cabside numbeplate as they were on 6000 only, but had been above it in common with all the other members of the class, so it was all a hoax.
