6002 1961-07-09 Leamington
‘King’ 4-6-0 No.6002 King William IV on 9th July 1961 with a Down express at Leamington.
6002 had the unusual distinction of having spent time allocated to no less than five Western Region Depots during its working life, including time at Exeter and Newton Abbot as well as the more customary locations for the Kings at Wolverhampton Stafford Road, Old Oak Common and Plymouth's Laira.
Remarkably the engine was given a Heavy Overhaul at Swindon Works as late as February 1962 at a time when other members of the class were being withdrawn, but despite that late overhaul 6002 was withdrawn from service just seven months later in September 1962, the engine being disposed of by Cox and Danks of Langley Green in early 1963.
This view confirms that 6002 was one of the class to receive new front frames and inside cylinder block, probably during its Heavy Overhaul at Swindon in November 1955.
Not all the " Kings " were so treated.
