6015 1956c Westbury

On 'The Mayflower', the 8.30am from Plymouth North Road with Old Oak Common's 6015, King Richard III at the head, the first of the class to receive a double chimney.
In this view 6015 has also had new front frames and inside cylinder block fitted whilst at Swindon Works, one of a number of the 'Kings' modified from 1955 in an effort to extend their working lives. High superheat boilers and mechanical lubricators together with improved draughting had taken its toll on the main frames of a number of the class with consequential cracks resulting from periods of intensive use, particularly on the West of England main line between Paddington and Plymouth, with its heavily loaded passenger workings and the severe gradients between Plymouth and Newton Abbot.
