6003 1962-04 Bristol Temple Meads
The fireman climbs aboard as King George IV waits to add a LMS BG to a west-bound express
Poor old " King George IV " looks a bit run down here waiting at Bristol Temple Meads, but it's 1962 and the " writing was on the wall " for the " Kings " still in service and their days were numbered as Diesel power replaced them on top link workings in the West.
What is of note here is that 6003 was apparently not one of the class to receive new front frames with their new inside cylinder block as did many of the class from 1955, and 6003 retains, therefore, the original style of inside valve spindle covers, and has no strengthening pieces welded to the lifting holes in the front frames, as this picture shows, modifications which were incorporated in those of the class which were so reframed.
