6875x J52 Pannier 1950s Stewarts Lane

6875x J52 Pannier 1950s Stewarts Lane

The J52 appears to have British Railways in full on the tank sides below the handrail but all other photos of the class show this above the handrail with the number centrally positioned below. Perhaps this was chalked on a dirty loco? After very close scrutiny of the image it may well be either 68758 or 68759, both allocated to Hornsey until September 1952 and used on transfer trips. This is the north side of Stewarts Lane shed with Hamptons and Sons Ltd, furnisher depository in the background. The lower windows are bricked up which only appears to have happened between 1939 the early 1950, presumably to minimise blast damage in the war. The Pannier is probably heading for Battersea Yard to collect a transfer freight to the WR, it would be a few more years before they were allocated to the SR.
