46242 1952-10-11 Harrow and Wealdstone
Coronation Pacific 46242 City of Glasgow wrecked at Harrow & Wealdstone on October 11, 1952.
Peter Kerslake says "A sad reminder of that fateful day and a view of the locomotive which was responsible for the double tragedy that claimed so many lives that day when 46242 on the overnight sleeper from Perth to Euston over-ran adverse signals and hit the local 7.31.am. from Tring to Euston just as it was leaving Harrow station.
Worse was to follow, however, as the resultant wreckage was immediately hit by the double-headed 8.0 a.m. from Euston to Manchester and Liverpool resulting in the second dreadful collision.
Three days after the crash much of debris from the wrecked coaches which had earlier buried 46242 has now been removed, revealing more of the engine. The workers high in the centre of the picture are at the edge of the now destroyed footbridge, a section of which was brought down by coaches flung into the air from the down Liverpool and Manchester express, and a safety bar together with emergency lighting has been hastily put in place."
