25245 1937-10-30 Bletchley

25245 1937-10-30 Bletchley

Ex-London & North Western Railway Whale 'Precursor' class 4-4-0 No. 25245 'Antaeus' (train). Built at Crewe in April 1906 as L&NWR No. 561 and withdrawn in March 1941. Ex-London & North Western Railway Webb '1P' class 2-4-2 Tank No. 6687 (pilot). Built at Crewe in Sept. 1893 as L&NWR No. 2218 and withdrawn in Dec. 1949 as BR No. 46687. Now HERE'S a puzzle! LMS 25245 is seen named as 'Marquis' but it SHOULD be named 'Antaeus'. This is because 25245 & 25188 were both in Crewe Works in September 1937. During their overhaul the splashers were interchanged resulting in the locos carrying incorrect nameplates. By March 1938, 25245 had regained the correct nameplate “Antaeus”, after running for around three months with no nameplates. No matter, it's a damp and dreary October day in 1937 and this double-header is waiting to depart northbound from Bletchley in Buckinghamshire.
