The photo was taken from the end of platforms 3 and 4 (1957 platform numbering). The maltings appear in the gap between the water tower and the engine shed.

Peter Kerslake adds "A 1954 view of Kings Lynn M.P.D. taken from the end of one of the five platforms at the terminus station with the Shedmaster's office in the left foreground and the substantial water tank behind it.
A mixed variety of Motive Power is on shed with the twin roofed main shed with its four covered roads just visible in the background, and locomotives going on shed following arrival here at the passenger station would enter the shed complex at this side but leave the Depot at the far end, known locally as the "London End".
The Depot turntable is visible in the centre, and with Kings Lynn being a terminus the turntable would have been in constant use, and the large signal gantry in the far distance has two single semaphores and a set of three on the right as there were a number of routes leading away from here to Hunstanton, Dereham and the main line to Cambridge via Ely"
