Entering Doncaster station from the north in June 1949, Thompson’s rebuild of No 4470 ‘Great Northern’. What was that strange circular disc doing at the top of the smokebox door? Note the lack of crest on the nameplate.

Ian Townend says "The disc looks similar to the discs introduced instead of the lamps for train identification when pacific 4470 was first rebuilt. Lamps were soon reinstated. The lined bufferbeam would suggest the loco is in the LNER green livery but with BR insignia. BR blue was applied about a month after the photo was taken. "
