62012 1960-04-06 near Banavie

LNER K1 2-6-0 No 62012 Mallaig line train crossing bridge near Banavie on 6 April 1960. This is the the River Lochy viaduct just out of the Garrison, (aka: Fort William). The present day loco yard at Tomnafaire is just to the rear of the cottage on the left of the picture. This once busy diesel yard for West Highland freight traffic has become the "Summer Palace" for the Jacobite locomotives and other steam and diesel locomotives visiting the West Highland line and the Mallaig Extension. It is also used for the inspection and preparation of the coaching stock for these services. The bridge was pictured before a large water pipe and timber foot bridge were added beside it in more recent times. There is a well known poster from the nineteen fifties which shows the view from the right of the line at this point. The subject of the poster is the Gresley Observation Car returning from Mallaig.
