4900 1958-01-19 Cardiff Canton

GWR Hall class 4-6-0 No 4900 Saint Martin at Canton shed, Cardiff on January 19, 1958.

Peter Kerslake adds "Displaying clear signs of having recently been through Swindon Works, with a freshly painted front end, including smokebox, cylinders, and buffer beam this fine image also shows a well turned out 4900 "Saint Martin" to be bearing an 81A Old Oak Common shedplate, the locomotive having been transferred there from Worcester Depot in or about June of 1956.
There are a pair of lamps in the "Express Passenger" formation so perhaps she is rostered to run back from here at Cardiff to Paddington on a fast passenger duty, and her tender is certainly well filled and not yet raked down.
A "Rare Bird" in the far west I did, however, manage to capture her on film in 1956 just once at Plymouth's Laira Depot whilst she was allocated to Old Oak. "
