5976 1959-06-18 Teignmouth
GWR Hall 4-6-0 No 5976 Ashwicke Hall with the 12.50 Exeter to Newton Abbot slow approaches Teignmouth on 18 June 1959.
Peter Kerslake says " That is Sprey Point in the right background, constructed in 1839 when during work a massive rockfall took place blocking the line but Brunel, rather than clearing away the fallen debris tidied and levelled it all up and built a wall round it, leaving it in place.
A little cafe run in the 1920s and 1930s by a Mr and Mrs Boyce was a popular venue at Sprey Point until it was vandalised by members of a Durham Army Regiment in 1940 and sadly it never reopened, the site today just housing a platelayers' hut.
The Teignmouth eastbound Advanced Starter signal has been cleared so there's something due on the Exeter bound line."
