4932 1939-06-22 Rattery

Hall class 4-6-0 No 4932 Hatherton Hall climbs Rattery bank near Tigley box with a down goods banked by a 2-6-2T on June 22, 1939.
Peter Kerslake says "Although not as steep a climb as Dainton or Hemerdon the long slog westwards from Totnes up through Rattery bank was one which regularly required banking assistance as seen here, with most probably one of Newton Abbot's large tank engines helping out at the rear to the summit at Rattery Tunnel.
A banking engine from Newton Abbot would invariably be stationed at Totnes, at the foot of Rattery, to assist westward freights as seen here, and it would also assist freights eastwards from Totnes to the summit of Dainton as well.
It's a lovely sunny day, crisp and clean exhausts, and "Hatheron Hall's" driver and fireman have spotted the cameraman! "
