5356 1958-05-04 Swindon

GWR 43XX 2-6-0 No 5356 with what is reported as an up milk train for Kensington approaching Swindon on 4 May 1958.

Peter Kerslake says "I could well be wrong but if this is a milk train there must be a lot of churns in the mixed variety of vans behind 5356 as milk at this time was conveyed by the milk tanker wagons each holding 4000 gallons of the white stuff compared to just a maximum of 17 gallons in each large conical metal churns of earlier days. The make up of the train indicates a mixed fast fitted freight possibly including parcels, perhaps an Enpart Siphon G or two for locomotive parts destined for Swindon Works and possibly some perishables traffic as well."
