43XX 1910s Dawlish
An Unknown GWR 43XX 2-6-0 on an up goods passing Dawlish about 1918, the telegraph poles were removed in 1919.
Peter Kerslake says "This interesting view shows the "Sea Lawn Gap" in the pedestrian walkway, made necessary in the 1840s when the wealthy residents in the elegant houses in the background objected to the extended footway and its users walking past their front windows and invading their privacy, forcing the unfortunate souls heading for Dawlish to risk their lives from the sea as they took to the beach until 1870 when Rockstone Bridge, from where this photograph was taken, was erected linking up with a pathway into Dawlish along the cliff top.
