GWR 43XX 2-6-0 No 8301 (formally 5301) at an unknown shed shortly before withdrawl for conversion into a Grange class 4-6-0 in 1937.
These locos were renumbered into the 83xx series when additional weight was added to the front end to decrease flange wear. - the big thick buffer beam is obvious. Shortage of "Blue" route availability engines led to the survivors gradually being converted back from 1944 onwards.
