42655 1961 Manchester

42655 1961 Manchester

Piloting Britannia 70052 1961 passing Deal Street box on the 9.30am Manchester-Glasgow. The Liverpool portion of the train was attached at Preston and 42655 came off at Bolton to work a local back to Manchester, a quick way to get it there without using an additional path.
I do not know whether the cause of the incident involving "Firth of Tay " and its unfortunate accident of 21st . January 1960 , was fully determined , and whether it was a design fault or poor maintenance which resulted in the engine losing both its lower slidebars at Settle on the overnight Sleeper from Glasgow to St. Pancras .
Seen here the following year , 70052 looks in fine condition , on a happier day than that one the previous year , when the accident claimed the lives of five passengers on 70052's train after its valve gear disintegrated following the loss of the slidebars , derailing an approaching freight which then struck the Sleeper with such tragic results.
