2882 1936-10-18 Swindon Works

Great Western Railway Churchward '28xx' class 2-8-0 No. 2882. Built at Swindon in Apr. 1919 and withdrawn in Dec. 1963. Over thirty years before Stanier's '8F' 2-8-0s of the LMS gained their deserved acclaim, George Jackson Churchward had already achieved much the same capability with his 84 '2800s' built from 1903. This was the genius of Churchward, who was quite literally decades ahead of his competitors in most respects. Looking every inch a classic, 2882's October 1936 portrait at Swindon Works is a visual treat!
