Great Western Railway Dean 'Duke' class 4-4-0 No. 3278 'Trefusis'. Built at Swindon in Mar. 1897 and withdrawn in Dec. 1938. This wonderful study of 'Trefusis' in Swindon MPD was taken in June 1935. The phrase 'Cathedral of Steam' is so appropriate to such places. Although we have one 'working' roundhouse that can still be savoured at Barrow Hill, the aromatic combination of steam, oil, grease and coal cannot be replicated. It also needed the gentle hiss of escaping steam and the metallic creaking of cooling metal to complete the symphony!
