61148 1964c Lumphinnans East Junction

61148 1964c Lumphinnans East Junction

LNER B1 4-6-0 No 61148 on a freight in c1964 whilst allocated to Thornton Junction.
Ian Norman says " I think this is passing Lumphinnans East Junction, between the junction and Lochgelly stn. Benarty Hill is in the background, and the angles for the hill put the location in the right area. There is a building (signal box?) facing the line behind the telegraph post in the foreground approximately where the junction would have been. This would be Lumphinnans East Junction signal box which was made redundant in 1935 when the North junction box took over its function. The long sweeping left hand curve with a relatively wide railway boundary is consistent with the location".
'Mary Coal Pit' Colliery was originally sited to the left of the line opposite the box but looking at old maps the tracks into it had dissapeared by 1943 and the site had been cleared by 1951.
