MS&LR 502 1880s Gorton
Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway Sacre '14' class 2-2-2 No. 502. Built at Gorton in 1883, withdrawn circa 1907.
The twelve locomotives of Charles Sacre's '14' class were designed for fast express duties on the Grantham-Sheffield-Manchester legs of London trains. After 1888 they were re-deployed to the 45-minute schedule of Manchester-Liverpool expresses. Note the lovely 'porthole' cabside window!
