73001 1951 Bristol Temple Meads

Brand new BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 No 73001 departs from Bristol Temple Meads with the 5pm to Derby in 1951.

Peter Kerslake says "Newly delivered 73001 is in a pristine condition here as it waits to leave Bristol Temple Meads, bound for Derby, its home shed from new until March 1956.
Later to work from Bath M.P.D. in the 'sixties over the Somerset and Dorset line 73001 was withdrawn in January of 1966 following a "Blow Back" of superheated steam and flame from its firebox into the cab due to a fractured smokebox steam pipe on the 1st of December, 1965 whilst at Midsomer Norton, but happily its footplate crew together with renowned photographer Ivo Peters and an Inspector who were also on the footpate at the time all escaped injury."
