Diesel depot 1965c Toton

Diesel depot 1965c Toton

Toton in early diesel days as many will remember it. Over twenty locomotives are on view, including seven Type 2s, eleven 'Peaks' of which four are 'Under Tenners' and a solitary Brush Type 4 just gets in the frame. There are no English Electric Type 1s providing evidence that this picture was taken around 1965 before the latter class arrived at Toton in quantity. The depot maintained around 400 main line and fifty shunting locomotives. It had fifteen roads, the four on the left with access from both ends could hold three Type 4 locomotives undergoing light maintenance, while the other eleven were single-ended and used for heavy maintenance.
