2544 1925 Hadley Wood
An un-named A1 with the 4pm Kings Cross to West Riding Express.
Initially designated as Class "1" and just a year old in this splendid 1925 image 2544 was subsequently named "Lemburg" and was the second effective "A 3" when Sir Nigel Gresley sought ways of improving his initial design in 1927 following the 1924 British Empire Exhibition and the 1925 Exchanges.
In an effort to reduce coal consumption and improve performance this engine was in 1927 accordingly fitted with a 220 lb. p.s.i. boiler, a larger superheater and modified cylinders , one of five rebuilt that year, and she was later to be numbered 60045 when taken into B.R.stock.
Rebuilding of the original "A1" class continued until 1949 when 60068 "Sir Visto" became the last of the class so treated and the single "A1" to be rebuilt by British Railways in 1949.
