729 1938-08-04 Edinburgh Haymarket MPD

Ex-North Eastern Railway Raven 'Z' (LNER 'C7') class 4-4-2 No. 729. Built by NBL of Glasgow in Sept. 1911 as NER No. 729 and withdrawn in Nov. 1945 as LNER No. 729. Ex-North British Railway Holmes 'C' (LNER 'J36') class 0-6-0 No. 9673 'Maude'. Built by Neilson & Co. of Glasgow in Dec. 1891 as NBR No. 673 and withdrawn in July 1966 as BR No. 65243 and preserved. This superb study is a fascinating juxtaposition of two Scottish-built locomotives at Edinburgh Haymarket MPD in August 1938. The 'foreigner' is 729 of course, but the NER had acquired running rights on NBR metals into Edinburgh since Victorian times. They originally had their own shed built adjacent to St. Margarets but this proved inadequate and Haymarket was used even before LNER days.
