LT&SR 49 1907 Grays Portland Cement Works
London, Tilbury & Southend Railway '49' class 0-6-0 No. 49. Built by Sharp, Stewart & Co. of Glasgow in June 1899 and withdrawn in November 1933 as LMS No. 2898.
The impressive backdrop of the Portland Cement Works at Grays in Essex is a long way from Turkey! This locomotive was one of two of a cancelled order intended for the Ottoman Railway. The LT&SR snapped them up in 1907 and changed a few minor design features immediately after delivery. Namely:- a taller standard LT&SR chimney, LT&SR livery with a cabside crest and wheel & handle fastening on the smokebox door. Very smart too!
