This was probably taken in late 1942 or early 1943 and shows 21C9 in its original condition and wartime black livery on a west of England express. In June 1943 its appearance was altered (improved I think) with the addition of small deflectors and the cowl or hood at the front of the smokebox. A rare shot of one of these locomotives in action in wartime.
