35017 1960s Where?
Rebuilt Merchant Navy 35017 Belgain Marine with west of England express. Note first two vehicles behind the tender are GUV parcels vans.
Robert Waterman adds "What appears to be the stripe on the first GUV may be one of the stick on labels displaying 'Surbiton - Okehampton Car Carrier Train' which were used on these vehicles (the 3 passenger coaches carried normal roofboards displaying the same). This was normally a Nine Elms 'Merchant Navy' turn to Exeter Central as seen here.
Can't identify the location though, although I believe can only be between Battledown Flyover and Salisbury Tunnel Junction exclusive as the train reporting numbers as carried on the loco smokebox were only carried between London and Salisbury so far as I can recall. This number or the loco diagram number carried on the top headcode disc will identify for sure if anyone has the loco diagram/train reporting notices".
Alan Goodwin adds " Don't know where it is but I would agree it is between Worting and Salisbury. I can tell you it isn't 1962 - in that year the down car carrier was worked by Nine Elms 8 loco and the reporing number was 404."
