With ballast from Meldon Quarry.
This picture shows well the " Walrus " 40 ton hopper wagons used to transport ballast material from Meldon Quarry eastwards on the rail network .
The normal working of such trains was a maximum of ten such wagons , and these shown here are well loaded as is clear from this photograph
