68088 1949-08 Stratford

Ex-NER 0-4-0T No 68088 at Stratford (of all places) in August 1949 having moved south from Tyne Dock. It was supposed to have been renumbered Departmental No 34 but this never happened and it was withdrawn as the final class survivor in December 1952 in much the same state as seen here. For such an antiquated looking machine it was built surprisingly late, in 1923, to the Worsdell 1888 design. Following withdrawal it was sold to industry and had a further career in private ownership. It still exists on the Great Central Railway at Loughborough in restored condition.
