Springs Branch allocated Fairburn tank No. 42295 is heading for Wigan Central at Lowton St Mary's on 11th October 1964. The station was on the former MS&LR line from Glazebrook CLC to Wigan Central and was itself a junction for the branch to St.Helens which closed in 1952, the bracket signal for which is visible in the foreground of this picture taken from the steps up to the road bridge. Since the L&NWR also had a station there it was often referred to as Lowton GC, but at nationalisation it was renamed Lowton St Mary's. The passenger service continued only until 1st November 1964, although parcels traffic certainly looks healthy with five vehicles in the yard and indeed the line lingered on for freight until 1968.
