42297 1964c Southport Chapel Street

Fairburn 2-6-4T No. 42297 on a local train, probably to Preston, departs from Chapel Street. It was allocated to Wigan L&YR shed from April 1949 until April 1964. Its 27D shedplate dates the photograph prior to the recoding of the shed in September 1963. Stanier 2-6-4T No. 42551 on the left had been transferred to Southport from Lower Darwen in April 1961. Two electric units are visible in the distance and the complex pointwork shows how busy the station was. The sign on the extreme right reads 'LONDON STREET EXCURSION PLATFORMS' which were numbered 12 and 13.
