The Fairburn tanks were a more utilitarian version of the Stanier engines, with a shorter wheelbase and simplified cut-off front footplate. No. 42121 waits at Platform 3 in September 1965. It had been transferred to Birkenhead Mollington Street in January and therefore its presence at Preston on this date is interesting.
