D5017 1959 Wingfield
BR 24 No D5017 on a 10 coach express at Wingfield station in 1959. This negative came unidentified and is interesting as the new loco went almost immediately (within a month) on loan to the Southern Region, never returning to former MR lines. There is a person in the rear cab (leaning out of the window) so I wonder if it is newly released from Derby Works and undergoing trials? The paintwork is not quite immaculate so it is not brand new.
Peter Hall adds: " In the August 1959 Railway Observer it says "From 9th to 13th June two diesels were booked to work the 8-0 a.m. Birmingham-Newcastle between Derby and York, returning to Derby with the 12-43 p.m. Newcastle-Bristol. On 9th June D5015/6 were noted on the outward working with nine bogies." Many years ago Peter Fox told me he had observed D5015/17 on the working on 10th, 11th and 12th but didn't see it on the 13th. Whether he observed the train in both directions I'm not sure. My suspicion is that this is the Newcastle-Bristol train on either the 13th or on the 12th having lost D5015 at some point. Does the shadow give a clue to the time of the photograph?''
