4050 1952-03-02 Swindon Works

Peter Kerslake says "A really interesting cab shot of 4050 Princess Alice withdrawn from service the previous month. It has already lost its nameplates even as early as this date. Another Star is ahead of 4050, both of which have the distinctive "elbow" outside main steam pipes which show up well in this picture. A number of 'Stars' had this design of steam pipe replaced by the 'Castle' type. There are no mechanical lubricators at this date, and the "sight feed" lubricator is visible just to the left of the reversing gear. Note also the lubricating box with its four feed pipes on the fireman's side of the front cab sheet.
4050 had been withdrawn in 1952 from Landore together with 4023, formerly named Danish Monarch which was condemned later that same year in July. At the end of 1932 Landore had no less than thirteen of the 'Star' class on its allocation, the most at any single depot, with their last one 4048 Princess Victoria ending the 25 years association of the class with Landore upon its withdrawal in January 1953."
