4061 1950s Windmill End

4061 1950s Windmill End

Churchward ‘Star’ No.4061 Glastonbury Abbey on a short express heading towards Dudley. It was one of the final batch of engines built in 1922/3 and named after Abbeys. No.4061 was allocated to Wolverhampton Stafford Road from 1950 onwards and was one of the last two ‘Stars’ in service when withdrawn in March 1957, outlived only by No.4056 Princess Margaret which lasted until October of that year. The chimneys in the background belong to Doulton & Co. Ltd whose pipeworks manufactured drainpipes and conduits, stacks of which can just be glimpsed to the left of No.4061. Building work is underway to the right.
