Gravelly Hill 1960s

Gravelly Hill 1960s

Gravelly Hill Station in the late 1960s looking towards Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield. The unusual two-story building containing the booking office, which is entered at the upper level, has survived but the small shelter and footbridge were replaced when the line was electrified. Ed Purcell remembers - "My first memory is of seeing a local train departing from behind the photographer under Hillaries Road bridge past what was then an ex LNWR starter. The loco was a small tank engine but I was too small to identify what exactly it was. It was a smokily foggy day probably in 1950. With some friends wnhen I was about ten we had a guards van ride on the afternoon returning Lichfield pick up goods as far as Aston station. As I recall the loco was one of Aston's 8Fs with a Fowler tender."
