45509 1950s Derby

45509 1950s Derby

There is some interesting stock in the works including an old MR CCT and a LNWR inspection saloon. Howard Newby adds 45509 was of course 17A's one and only Patriot loco during the 1950s, a notoriously bad steamer ( so seeing it blowing off is something of a rarity!), which the shed never knew what to do with. This is a shot taken in the 1950s but we can narrow it down to pre-1952, as the rebuilding of the station has not yet commenced. You can just see some of the war damage to the original Stephenson train shed on the extreme left of the shot which prompted this. Given the angle of the sun it looks like During this period 45509's regular duty was on the 12.37 Newcastle - Bristol, which departed from Derby at 16.52. However, the works clock on the right shows a much earlier time and a platform 6 departure suggests it is on the 13.45 Manchester Central - St. Pancras, due to leave at 15.20, however it is already ten minutes late as the big hand is pointing down!
