Piloted by a Crab 2-6-0, Patriot No 45501 has arrived at Euston in July 1959 with an up express. The large coupled wheel centres and fluted coupling rods show clearly in this photo, relics of the original Claughton (No 5902 ‘Sir Frank Ree) which gave rise to this rebuilt 4-6-0.
