34090 1955-07-26 Cheriton Junction

Southern Railway designed Bulleid 'Battle of Britain' class 4-6-2 No. 34090 'Sir Eustace Missenden'. Built at Brighton in Feb. 1949 and withdrawn in July 1967. Cheriton Junction in Kent seen here in July 1955, is where the Elham Valley cross-country route to Canterbury (on the right) departed from the main line. It was never commercially successful and after being used by the MOD during WW2 for rail-mounted gun training it closed in 1947. A rather scruffy 34090 is heading for Folkestone.
