Tackling the last few hundred yards of the 1 in 36 assault to Dainton summit 34062 , "17 Squadron" is working the daily crew familiarisation duty Down local to Plymouth North Road from Exeter via the Western Region main line. It was necessary for Southern Region footplatemen, working their own engines, to have knowledge of the Western line between Exeter and Plymouth so as to maintain services in the event that their own North Devon line via Okehampton was blocked by adverse weather conditions, or any similar disruption, and there was, therefore, a daily such working in each direction at this period of time. The unrebuilt "Battle of Britain" is making light work of the climb, but has only three coaches and a van, well within her capabilities, even for Dainton!
